Update on the reopening of obstetrics at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre

Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to provide an update on progress to reopen the obstetrics unit at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre (JPMRHC) in Gander. Our focus remains on providing safe, quality and sustainable obstetrical care.

Starting on February 12, 2024, some services will be transferred by relocating pediatrics and gynecology patients to the obstetrics unit, which aligns with the service delivery model for these programs.

The health authority is working toward finalizing a date to begin labour and delivery services and remains committed to reopening early in the new year.

Over the last year, staff and physicians at NL Health Services have been working diligently to support the return of obstetric services at JPMRHC:

• The required renovations to reopen the obstetrics unit have been completed.
• Three of four obstetricians, registered nurses and midwives are in place, with orientation in process for the newly hired Obstetrician.
• The midwifery and nursing team are ready and are currently supporting clients.
• Competency assessments and training were completed in December 2023, with great success by the nursing, midwifery and physician teams in the region.

Throughout this process, NL Health Services has engaged the Town of Gander and area partners regularly to provide progress reports. Once a date for full reopening has been finalized, it will be communicated.

NL Health Services would like to thank the physicians and staff in place for their commitment to reintroducing this service for residents in the area and for completing the necessary training and exercises to support the reopening of the unit. We would like to thank the obstetrical team at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor for their dedication and support in providing obstetrical services within the Central Zone.

Finally, we also thank residents of the area for their cooperation as we focus on building a safe and quality obstetrical service for the people of the area.
