“After a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication by our project team, Western Zone clinical staff and physicians, provincial partners, and with the support of residents in the area, the provincial government, Western Regional Hospital Foundation, Cancer Care Foundation, and community partners, NL Health Services is pleased to be opening the doors of the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital,” said Teara Freake, vice-president, and chief operating officer (COO), NL Health Services – Western Zone. “We are proud and appreciative of the countless hours our staff have put into planning and preparing this modern, state of the art facility for operations, which will allow us to provide even better health care delivery to our patients.”

This facility provides warm, energetic, and patient-centered spaces for patients and visitors to receive services; it optimizes hospital-based services in the region; and improves workplace quality for our physicians and staff. Please view this video tour to explore the hospital.

“The new Western Memorial Regional Hospital has a clear patient focus in its design with welcoming inpatient rooms which have attractive views, spacious hallways, improved building entrances and convenient public parking.” said Paulette Morgan, senior director of hospital and clinical services, NL Health Services – Western Zone. “The hospital also provides a modern work environment for our health-care teams and Western Zone employees.”

NL Health Services also marks a milestone with the transfer of many specialized medical services, diagnostic imaging services, inpatient mental health unit, critical care services, cancer care, renal dialysis, and pharmacy support from the hospital at 1 Brookfield Avenue. This site has been open since 1976 and has played a significant role in the delivery of health care in area and health education of our provincial health sector workforce. The adjoining Western Regional School of Nursing has graduated thousands of nurses from the Corner Brook campus.

While the site is closing to inpatients and hospital services, it will continue to serve as an administrative and clinical health services building for the short term. This facility will be renamed the Corner Brook Community Health Centre effective June 3, 2024. Human Resources, Finance, Laundry Services, and the Western Regional School of Nursing will continue to temporarily operate in their current location. The following outpatient health services will also continue to be available at 1 Brookfield Avenue temporarily:

Important Reminders

• Emergency Services: Urgent and emergency services at the old hospital will continue throughout the move-in period. On Sunday, June 2, all inpatients will be transferred to the new hospital. Individuals requiring health and emergency services should proceed to the new location starting at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday June 2, 2024.
• Patient transfer: In coordination with the City of Corner Brook, a designated route will be used to transfer inpatients. Roads identified include Brookfield Avenue, West Valley Road, O’Connell Drive, University Avenue, Corporal Pinsent Memorial Drive, and Lewin Parkway. To enable a smooth transfer of inpatients to the new hospital, the public is asked to avoid this route on June 2 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., if possible.
• June 2 visitation guidelines: Two designated visitors per patient will be permitted in the new hospital starting at 5:00 p.m. This one-day restriction will assist staff in carrying out a more relaxed move for patients to their new surroundings.
