Posted: July 15, 2024

Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is reminding residents from Labrador West who are displaced or impacted by the wildfire to reach out to 811 or 911 depending on the medical need. As per the ongoing evacuation order for Labrador City, the Labrador West Health Centre remains closed until it is safe to reopen.

Urgent/non-emergent health issues

Residents are directed to call 811 for urgent/non-emergent health issues and medication-related concerns, including prescription refills.

A temporary ambulatory care clinic has been established in Wabush for residents with urgent/non-emergent needs such as wound care and administration of IV medications. The clinic is by appointment only and residents are encouraged to call 811. If an in-person visit is required, residents will be contacted directly with an appointment time.

811 HealthLine also provides 24/7 access to:

• medical advice (including virtual nurse practitioner appointments which can usually be accommodated within three days);

• health information; and

• support in a mental health crisis.

Medical emergencies

NL Health Services reminds patients with a medical emergency to call 911. Ambulances are on standby in Labrador West to respond to emergency calls as walk-in emergency services are not available.

Mental health supports

NL Health Services recognizes that this may be a difficult time for people and encourages them to avail of mental health resources, as needed.
