Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to announce that dermatology services are now being offered at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital (WMRH) through visiting clinics.

“Re-introducing dermatology services in the Western Zone is a significant step forward in enhancing the level of care that we provide to patients,” said Paulette Morgan, senior director of hospital and clinical services, NL Health Services – Western Zone. “This initiative ensures that patients in the region will have access to dermatology services closer to home, eliminating the added costs and inconvenience of travel.”

Visiting dermatology clinics will be offered one weekend a month beginning in October. The next visiting clinic will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5, 2024.

“We are pleased to be offering dermatology services to the people residing in the Western Zone,” said Dr. Joe Coffey, division head of dermatology, Newfoundland and Labrador. “These services are especially important for patients in Newfoundland and Labrador who face unique conditions which may impact their skin, such as high sunlight exposure from working outdoors, or who have chronic conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.”

Dermatologists diagnose and treat skin conditions, while providing important skincare solutions such as assessment, treatment, management and prevention. There are a limited number of spaces available for each clinic and residents in the Western Zone who are seeking dermatology services are asked to speak to their primary care physician or nurse practitioner about a referral.

NL Health Services would like to thank the dermatology team in the Eastern-Urban Zone for their dedication and support to providing visiting clinics for residents in Western Newfoundland. Recruitment efforts for dermatologists in the Western Zone are ongoing.
