Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to release its new Accessibility Plan, to create a more accessible and inclusive health-care system by reducing barriers to services for persons with visible and non-visible disabilities. The plan will identify goals that will determine next steps to improve accessibility over a two-year period from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

“At NL Health Services, we are committed to promoting equity and taking action to support persons with disabilities,” said Karen Stone, KC, CEO (interim), NL Health Services. “The Accessibility Plan marks the start of a structured, formal approach to accessibility at NL Health Services. It is guided by six pillars to improve accessibility within our services, programs and practices.”

The six key pillars identified in the plan include: training and education; communications and access to information; policy and procedures; access to services and accessibility supports; infrastructure and built environment; and employment.

“The accessibility plan is guided by the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us,” said Darla King, Vice-president of transformation – well-being with NL Health Services. “This means that persons with disabilities are at the heart of this work and are partners as we work together to develop strategies and goals to create a culture of inclusion and accessibility.”

As work on the plan progresses, NL Health Services will continue to engage and collaborate with persons with disabilities, organizations representing persons with disabilities and other interest holders.  To learn more about the plan, visit the NL Health Services website.
