Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to mark the official opening of the new emergency department (ER) at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre in Bonavista.

The new ER opened for patient care on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, and was designed to provide a larger, more efficient space for patients and staff. The new space has additional capacity with seven treatment spaces and state-of-the-art equipment. It also follows best practice for the triage of patients and supports improved patient flow throughout the department.

“NL Health Services is pleased to provide safe and quality care to patients of the Bonavista area in this new space dedicated to the delivery of emergency health-care services,” says Debbie Walsh, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer – Eastern Rural, NL Health Services. “We would also like to thank our dedicated health-care professionals for their ongoing commitment to patient care in support of our vision of ‘Health and Well-Being. Every Person. Every Community’ and thank you to all those who helped to make the new ER a reality.”

Construction of the new ER at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre was made possible thanks to financial contributions from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; donors to the Discovery Health Care Foundation, including community partners; and the Bonavista Peninsula Dialysis Committee.

“The official opening of this new Emergency Room in Bonavista, as well as the recent initiatives our government has taken to reimagine our health care system, is helping to provide quality health care delivery where it’s needed most,” says the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Health and Community Services. “The seven treatment spaces and state-of-the art equipment will allow people on the Bonavista Peninsula to receive the care they need closer to home. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our community and health care workers who prioritize the vital need for accessible and high-quality emergency services.”

“On behalf of the Town of Bonavista, we are thrilled to see this next phase of investment and rejuvenation for our regional hospital through this brand new Emergency Department,” says John Norman, Mayor of Bonavista. “This investment not only helps to improve patient care and hospital flow, but also offers staff in our health-care system a modern state-of-the-art workspace. This investment shows the people of the Bonavista Peninsula that our provincial government is focused on the sustainability, development, and growth of the Bonavista region.”

Patients can access the ER via a new entrance at the rear of the hospital, and may park in the new parking area behind the hospital; signage is also in place to direct patients.
