Emergency Medical Responder Educational Opportunities
Overview
Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is offering an emergency medical responder (EMR) certification program for individuals interested in becoming EMRs. Training and employment opportunities have now been expanded across the province.
Recruitment for the training opportunity and employment upon successful graduation is underway for sessions now beginning on March 2, 2025. There are opportunities available across the island portion of the province and further details are included below. This webpage will be updated with information on other training and employment opportunities across the province as it becomes available.
NL Health Services will provide financial support to successful applicants to cover the cost of the program (course and training materials), which includes online instruction and four days of in-person training. Individuals who successfully graduate and meet all other employment requirements will be hired with a return in service commitment.
EMR training opportunities:
- The current training opportunities will take place from March 2-15, 2025 (online instruction and four days of in-person training). The deadline to apply is January 17, 2025. Individuals are advised that the course dates for current training opportunities have been changed from February to March 2025. Individuals who previously applied for the February course do not need to re-apply.
- Note: The location(s) and dates for the in-person portion of the training during the March 2-15, 2025 course are to be determined.

- NL Health Services will provide financial support through reimbursement to successful applicants to cover the cost of the EMR certification program (course and materials).
- Reimbursement for travel, accommodation, and meals for in-person training will be provided based on eligibility criteria.
- Employment opportunities with NL Health Services will be available to applicants who are successful in the recruitment process, course, Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) exam and meet all other conditions of employment.
Examples of key duties:
- Responding to medical emergencies, operating the ambulance safely, and transporting patients requiring urgent care;
- Conducting patient assessments during transport, monitoring their condition, and providing stabilization as needed; and
- Assessing and treating a range of injuries and illnesses, from trauma to respiratory emergencies.

- Salary: Successful candidates will be offered a competitive salary range of $23.78 to $26.19 per hour.
- Hours of work: 75 bi-weekly hours; shifts will vary and include days, nights, weekends, on-call, and standby hours.
