Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services advises the public of a new client services ambassador program for emergency departments at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. This program, delivered through NL Health Services’ contracted partnership for security services, includes the introduction of an ambassador position to serve as a client-focused liaison within the emergency departments.

The position is a nontraditional security role that will focus on pro‐active engagement with emergency department patients and visitors, by aiming to improve the overall client experience and to help prevent and/or reduce violent and aggressive behaviour. This is accomplished by using strategies that are respectful, empathetic and supportive, aimed at promoting a safer environment for clients, staff, and visitors to emergency departments.

“NL Health Services is pleased to work with Paladin Security to offer this client services ambassador program at emergency departments in St. John’s,” said Joe Sobol, senior director, provincial integrated protection services with NL Health Services. “We understand that requiring emergency care can be a stressful time for both patients and their loved ones and hope that this program can help enhance the patient experience for those presenting to emergency departments.”

The ambassador, located within emergency department waiting rooms, can be recognized by their light blue polo shirt with “Ambassador” written across the back. Examples of key duties include assisting with providing directions in the health-care facility, sharing information about community services, and supporting the overall safety and wellbeing for patients and families. Clients are invited to approach the ambassador to understand more about how they can assist.
