Redevelopment of Grand Falls-Windsor Obstetrical Unit to Enhance Care for Central Newfoundland Families
Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to announce an upcoming redevelopment project to upgrade the obstetrics unit at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, in Grand Falls-Windsor.
A key feature of the project will be relocating the unit to the same floor as the operating room, which will improve patient safety by reducing response times and supporting quicker access to surgical interventions, when necessary.
“The redevelopment of this unit marks a significant advancement in enhancing patient safety, comfort, and the overall health-care experience for families in the zone,” said Craig Davis, vice-president and chief operating officer (acting) for the Central Zone of NL Health Services. “This transformative redevelopment of the unit will encourage family involvement, maintain a strong focus on safety and wellbeing of patients and staff, and elevate the patient experience.”
The redevelopment will include private birthing rooms for expectant mothers, which are designed to create a comfortable and home-like environment that enhances the overall birthing experience.
“Single-room maternity care is the Gold Standard in obstetrical care, offering new and expectant mothers and families private accommodations and a quiet environment to share this special time with family and friends, while being able to access modern medical services and technology,” stated Dr. Jennifer Mercer, chief of obstetrics/gynecology for the Central Zone of NL Health Services. “The redevelopment will eliminate having to move patients requiring urgent and emergent surgical intervention to another floor, thereby reducing patient risk. Also, having a modern design for the unit supports a unified work environment that enhances unit flow and efficiency. This redevelopment supports our patient-centered approach to obstetrical care and improves overall patient safety and satisfaction.”
Redevelopment of the Obstetrical unit at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre is set to begin soon, with a $6.3 million contract being awarded to Brooks Construction.
NL Health Services will provide updates on this project as it progresses.
