Public AdvisoriesLabrador-Grenfell
Posted: July 19, 2024

Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is reminding residents from Labrador West who are displaced or impacted by the wildfire that health-care services are available and to reach out to 811 or 911 depending on the medical need, such as emergencies, prescription refills, mental health services, and appointments.

Mental Health Supports

Support is available for anyone who may be affected by this situation and is experiencing mental health concerns. NL Health Services recognizes that this is a difficult time for people and encourages them to avail of mental health resources. For a full listing of available resources, please visit: https://nl.bridgethegapp.ca/adult/mental-health-services-during-natural-disasters-and-emergencies/ or call 811 in a mental health crisis.

Appointments at Labrador West Health Centre

As per the ongoing evacuation order for Labrador City, the Labrador West Health Centre remains closed. All previously scheduled primary health care appointments (such as prenatal, surgical services, specialty clinics, rehabilitation and diagnostic imaging) will not proceed at this time. Patients will be contacted to reschedule once it is safe to reopen and we appreciate the public’s understanding as this process may take longer than normal.

Urgent/Non-Emergent Health Issues and Prescription Refills

Residents are directed to call 811 for urgent/non-emergent health issues and medication-related concerns, as well as prescription refills.

Requests for prescriptions and prescription refills are being coordinated through 811 and then triaged to NL Health Services’ physicians who are assessing and facilitating requests with a local pharmacy in Labrador West. Pick up is arranged directly between the patient and the pharmacist.

A temporary ambulatory care clinic has been established to manage urgent/non-emergent needs such as wound care, injections, and administration of IV medications. The clinic is by appointment only and residents are directed to call 811. If an in-person visit is required following an assessment by 811 and the health-care team in Labrador West, residents will be contacted directly with an appointment time. It is important to note that this clinic is not available for walk-in appointments at this time.

811 HealthLine also provides 24/7 access to:

  • medical advice (including virtual nurse practitioner appointments which can usually be accommodated within three days);
  • health information; and
  • support in a mental health crisis.

Medical Emergencies

NL Health Services reminds patients with a medical emergency to call 911. Ambulances are on standby in Labrador West to respond to emergency calls as walk-in emergency services are not available.
