Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is providing an update on health-care services at the Labrador West Health Centre due to wildfire activity in the area.

A provincial Emergency Operations Centre has been activated and we are working closely with the municipality, provincial agencies, and other partners to ensure appropriate plans are in place to respond to this evolving situation.

NL Health Services is working to safely evacuate in-patients, long-term care residents and non-essential staff from the Labrador West Health Centre. Staff are in the process of contacting family members to discuss the plans for evacuation.

During this time, the Labrador West Health Centre remains open and emergency services continue to be available. However, the public is advised to proceed to the Labrador West Health Centre for emergency or essential care only.

The health, safety and well-being of patients and staff remains our top priority. Patients with a medical emergency who require an ambulance should continue to call 911.

Health-care services continue to be available at alternate sites across the Labrador-Grenfell Zone. The Churchill Falls Community Clinic and Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley – Goose Bay are open and operating in an “Elevated State of Readiness” in the event that services are needed to support potential additional demands at health-care facilities.

NL Health Services recognizes that this may be a difficult time for people and encourages them to avail of mental health resources, if necessary.
