People-centred care
Our philosophy of care: People-centred care (PCC)
Lived-experience expertise + health care expertise = Safer and more inclusive care

What is people-centred care?
People-centred care means putting people first in everything we do. When patients, families, staff, physicians and leaders partner together, healthcare becomes safer, more inclusive and better for everyone.
What is a patient and family experience advisor?
Patient and family experience advisors are people who have received health-care services and want to use their experiences to make care better for others. They work in partnership with staff, doctors and leaders to improve health care for patients and families.

Who can be a patient and family experience advisor?
You may be a great fit if you:
- Have received health-care services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Want to help improve health care (in person or virtually).
- Are willing to volunteer your time—commitment is flexible!
“Patient” means a person who is receiving or who has received a health service. (NL Patient Safety Act)
The term patient is also used to represent the terms client and resident (those receiving care in long term care homes).
Is this right for you?
Volunteering as a patient and family experience advisor may be a good fit if you:
-
- Enjoy working with others.
- Are a good listener.
- Can see beyond your own experience to the bigger picture.
- Want to partner with other families and health-care providers.
- Can maintain privacy and confidentiality.
