Update on Services at Carbonear General Hospital Due to Ongoing Wildfires
Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services advises the public of temporary updates to services at Carbonear General Hospital due to the ongoing wildfires. Patient lists are being reviewed and some outpatient appointments will be rescheduled on Monday, August 11, 2025; outpatient appointments for the remainder of the week will be assessed next week and rescheduled if needed. If an individual’s appointment is affected they will be contacted directly to reschedule.
This service change is out of an abundance of caution due to forecasted weather and possible smoke in the area as a result of the wildfires. It is in support of patient safety and to avoid unnecessary travel to the hospital if not required and for patients with lower immediate needs.
NL Health Services would like to reassure the public that all urgent and emergent health-care services at the site are not affected at this time and the emergency department remains open. Mental health and addictions and primary health-care staff are also on-site at the reception centres located at Carbonear Academy, 88 Valley Road, Carbonear and Villanova Junior High, 2697 Topsail Rd., Conception Bay South.
Health-care staff are offering in-person and virtual care at these reception centres on a drop-in basis, including:
• Treating a cold, flu, or sore throat.
• Managing minor injuries (e.g., sprains, cuts).
• Addressing a urinary tract infection.
• Evaluating and managing a rash or allergic reaction.
• Providing care for a one-time medication refill or urgent symptom.
• Navigation to resources or areas of support.
811 HealthLine is also available 24/7 to provide:
• medical advice (including virtual nurse practitioner appointments);
• health information; and
• support in a mental health crisis.
