CorCare: Transforming Health Care in NL

1. CorCare is the new province-wide health information system – It will connect all settings and services together in one information system, replacing multiple disconnected computer systems that no longer best serve clinicians, staff, and patients.

2. Patients are at the heart of CorCare – CorCare will help patients become true partners in their care and help lead to better health for people in the province. A dedicated patient advisory committee has been involved every step of the way.

3. CorCare is re-wiring the province for health care – Approximately 14,000 devices such as tablets, smartphones and Workstations on Wheels (WOWs) are being deployed for staff. You may already be seeing new technology in your workspace.

4. CorCare gives better access to personal health information – Patients will have enhanced access to test results, chart information, and easier appointment management through MyHealthNL powered by CorCare.

5. CorCare provides real time patient information – All clinicians and staff in the circle of care have access to the same real-time patient health record, minimizing gaps in information.

6. Training and support is coming – Trainers are being recruited now to learn CorCare and begin training sessions in January 2026. Keep an eye out for more training details as the project evolves.

7. Go-live is scheduled for spring 2026 – CorCare will launch across the province, with on-site support to help clinicians and staff when the switch is flipped.

8. Privacy and security are priorities – Modern technology helps protect personal health information. With reduced reliance on paper records, risks of lost information, or privacy breaches diminishes.

9. Expert advice is embedded in CorCare – More than 700 subject matter experts across more than 80 advisory committees and working groups, including more than 180 physicians, are involved in CorCare.

 10. CorCare will help improve health care in Newfoundland and Labradorians– Providing more patient features in MyHealthNL, and modern clinical workflows, CorCare will help clinicians, staff, and patients work better together.

CorCare – your new health information system (HIS). Previously known as Starling and Epic, CorCare is the unified identity for both the project and the system.

Epic – the company that produced the software on which CorCare will operate.

Project Team – the group of more than 200 technical, operational, clinical, and support resources that are working together to build, test, and implement your CorCare HIS.

Work Groups – collaborative groups of program and zone representatives, responsible for making decisions about how the CorCare project is implemented.

Advisory Councils – collaborative groups  of program and zone leaders, responsible for resolving difficult decisions or decisions that cross over multiple functional areas.

End User – any individual that can log in to and use CorCare.

End User Device – any device that someone uses to access CorCare.

Super Users – end users who help ease the transition to CorCare. They receive additional training so they can assist in readiness efforts and support peers during training, go-live, and beyond.

Readiness – the process of ensuring people and systems have the necessary level of capacity to make the transition to CorCare.

Go-live – April 25, 2026: the day we will switch over to using CorCare.

Business Continuity Access (BCA) or Downtime Procedures – the process of ensuring health care services can continue with minimal disruption in the event of an outage, disaster or crisis.

Build Wave – A timeframe in which a certain portion of the new CorCare system will be created. There are 4 Build Waves for the CorCare project; upon completion of these, testing of the new system can begin.

Conversion – the process of moving data from existing systems to CorCare and validating that data transferred correctly. A majority of this will happen automatically; however some critical information will need to be manually entered and validated.

CorCollab – Periods of dedicated collaboration and problem-solving where the project team strives for a “big push” in progress on specific and/or time-sensitive components.

Cutover – the process of transferring active inpatient information from MediTech to CorCare in the hours leading up to, and at the moment CorCare goes live in April 2026.

Integrated testing – the technical process of validating that two or more systems or applications are appropriately connected for information to flow correctly in and out of Corcare.

Mapping – the process of matching fields from one system to another. It is an important part of ensuring data from existing systems will flow correctly into and out of CorCare.

Regulatory Data – information that must be stored, managed, and accessed in accordance with legal requirements or professional standards.

System Design & Configuration – the technical process of creating and customizing the Epic-produced software applications to ensure CorCare meets the unique needs of NLHS.

Testing – the ongoing process of checking that the new CorCare system will do what it is supposed to do. Technical testing by the project team happens in the background; however, there are opportunities for some end users to participate in practical, hands-on testing of the new system.
