NL Health Services First in Canada to Achieve National Accreditation for Medical Imaging

November 28, 2025

Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services Provincial Medical Imaging Program has earned national accreditation for every medical imaging location across the province. Being the first province in Canada to achieve this national benchmark is the result of the health authority’s commitment to delivering safe, consistent, and high quality diagnostic services for patients across Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first province in Canada to achieve national accreditation for our medical imaging program,” said Dr. Marc Elliott, clinical chief of medical imaging, NL Health Services. “This achievement is a testament to the skill and dedication of our medical imaging teams. With this accreditation, patients can be confident that whether they receive care at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, or in communities like Trepassey, Fogo Island, Port aux Basques, Forteau, or Labrador City, they are receiving the same high standard of safe, consistent, and quality medical imaging services.”

Accreditation is an ongoing process where surveyors assess the organization against established standards to identify where the organization is doing well and to support continuous advancement in areas that require improvement with the overall goal of improving patient care and outcomes.

Assessments were conducted in all 42 medical imaging locations by external peer surveyors from Accreditation Canada, examining organizational services, policies, procedures, facilities and leadership. As a result of the assessments, NL Health Services received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 15189 Plus accreditation award for Diagnostic Imaging. – an international standard recognizing excellence in quality and safety in medical imaging services.

“Through accreditation processes such as this, NL Health Services’ performance is continuously assessed, allowing us to identify and act on opportunities for improvement in the care and services we provide. Patients and families can also have confidence that the care they receive meets trusted, independent standards,” said Tina Edmonds, vice‑president (acting) – quality and learning health systems, NL Health Services. “I would like to thank our NL Health Services’ team for the hard work and dedication that has led to this achievement.”

NL Health Services’ Provincial Medical Imaging Program includes X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), computed tomography (CT) scans, mammograms, ultrasounds and more.
