NL Health Services Marks Historic Day for Mental Health in Newfoundland and Labrador
April 11, 2025Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is recognizing a historic day in the delivery of mental health care for the people across Newfoundland and Labrador. As of Sunday, April 13, 2025, the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre will officially open to the public at 300 Prince Phillip Drive, St. John’s, collocated on the Health Sciences Centre Campus.
“The new Mental Health and Addictions Centre is a generational milestone in transforming mental health and addictions services in our province. This centre allows NL Health Services and our partners to continue to deliver high quality, recovery-oriented, person-centered mental health care which better support patients, clients, and families.” said Dr. Pat Parfrey, CEO, NL Health Services. “It takes solid partnerships to achieve such an accomplishment so I would like to acknowledge the continued support of the provincial government, the Health Care Foundation, individuals with lived and living experience and community partners throughout this journey.”
The new, modern 102-bed mental health facility provides warm, patient-centered, quality health care with features including individual inpatient rooms; shared spaces for recreation, art therapy, horticulture and more; outdoor terraces; and upgraded counselling and therapy spaces. The Waterford Hospital has been open since 1855 and played a significant role in the delivery of mental health care to the people of the province. While the site is closing to inpatients and hospital services, it will continue to serve as an administrative and community mental health services building for the short term. The following community mental health services will continue to be available at 306 Waterford Bridge Road temporarily:
- flexible assertive community treatment team (FACTT)
- assertive community treatment team (ACTT)
- psychosis intervention and early recovery (PIER)

Important Reminders
- Emergency mental health services: Urgent and emergency mental health services at the Waterford Hospital will continue throughout the move-in period. Individuals requiring emergency mental health services should proceed to the new location starting at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday April 13, 2025.
- Patients with a medical emergency who require an ambulance should call 911. Individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis or who need mental health support should call the NL HealthLine at 811.
- Patient transfer: All current inpatients will be moved from the Waterford Hospital on Sunday, April 13. Patients and families are being provided with information to support them during the transfer and may speak with a manager if they have any questions. We are committed to supporting a seamless transition for all patients.
- April 13 visitation guidelines at MHAC: Two designated visitors per patient will be permitted in the new site at 6:00 p.m. This one-day restriction will assist staff in carrying out a more relaxed move for patients to their new surroundings.
- Blood collection: Outpatient blood collection services at the Waterford Hospital will continue to be available for the time being. Individuals can continue to book appointments online or by phone (1-833-409-2734).
- X-ray services: The last day to book an X-ray appointment at the Waterford Hospital is April 11, 2025. Individuals who would regularly book an X-ray appointment at the Waterford Hospital location are advised that, after April 11, 2025, they can proceed to the Health Sciences Centre or St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for outpatient X-ray services. These sites offer a walk-in X-ray service from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
