NL Health Services Provides Update on New Morgue and Implementation of Unclaimed Remains Legislation
May 28, 2025Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is today providing an update on the construction of a new morgue facility in St. John’s and implementation of the new legislation that outlines the process to manage unclaimed remains.
New Morgue Facility:
- As of Monday, May 26, 2025, the new morgue facility in St. John’s is operational.
- This modernized space reflects the provincial health authority’s ongoing commitment to dignity in death, offering enhanced capacity, privacy and safety features to support both clinical teams and grieving families during difficult times.
Unclaimed Remains Legislation:
- NL Health Services is responsible for overseeing unclaimed remains in accordance with the Provincial Health Authority Act and the Provincial Health Authority Regulations.
- As needed, information regarding unclaimed deceased persons is posted to this webpage for five days, as per the provincial government regulations. NL Health Services handles unclaimed human remains respectfully and takes steps to identify and contact individuals who may be entitled to claim the remains, prior to posting information to the webpage.
NL Health Services thanks the public for their understanding as this policy is finalized and implemented in conjunction with the required procedures and guidelines.
