Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to advise that individuals between 40-74 years may now self-refer for an appointment for breast screening.

Individuals can access breast screening through their primary health-care provider or through self-referral by calling a screening navigator toll-free at 1-800-414-3443.

The policy changes were based on guidance from the Canadian Cancer Society following a review of evidence and consultation with breast cancer experts and people with lived experience.

NL Health Services’ breast screening program offers screening mammography (breast X-rays) at five sites in the province: St. John’s, Gander, Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Labrador West. Regular mammograms, which are X-ray images of the breast, play an important role in finding breast cancer early. The program also provides breast navigation services from abnormal mammogram results to further follow-up.

Additional information about breast screening can be found on the Cancer Care website here.
