Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services advises the public that starting today (Tuesday, January 2, 2024), construction work will begin on level one of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in St. John’s to update the space of the former chemotherapy unit and improve access to the Garden of Hope.

The renovations will include converting the space into additional clinic rooms where health-care professionals can treat patients. The expansion will add an additional 10 clinic rooms for a total of 28. Upon completion of this two-year construction project, patients and their families will also be able to access the Garden of Hope through a secondary entrance off of a newly constructed waiting room.

Appointments and services will continue throughout the construction period, while access to some areas of level one will be temporarily redirected. Throughout portions of the construction period, the Garden of Hope will be temporarily closed. NL Health Services is working with the contractor to minimize this closure.

Patients and visitors proceeding to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre will continue to register at the main entrance when arriving for their appointments. Individuals are asked to proceed with caution, to follow signage in the area, and to seek the assistance of staff who will be on site to help direct patients and their families, as needed. Individuals can also expect increased levels of noise in the construction area.

The new chemotherapy unit opened for patient care on Monday, June 26, 2023. For more information about the unit, please visit: https://cancercare.easternhealth.ca/about-us/chemotherapy-unit-st-johns/.

NL Health Services would like to thank the public and employees for their cooperation and apologizes for any inconvenience this construction work may cause.
