Update on Health-care Services During State of Emergency for Portion of Bay de Verde Peninsula

August 10, 2025

Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services advises the public that health-care services continue to be available on the Bay de Verde Peninsula during the state of emergency due to wildfires called by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. At this time, services at Carbonear General Hospital, Dr. A. A. Wilkinson Memorial Health Centre in Old Perlican, and the Carbonear Community Health Services building are not impacted. Western Bay Clinic remains closed.

Patient lists for Carbonear General Hospital were reviewed on Friday, August 8, 2025, and some outpatient appointments have been rescheduled on Monday, August 11, 2025. Outpatient appointments for the remainder of the week will be assessed next week and rescheduled if needed. If an individual’s appointment is affected they will be contacted directly to reschedule. This service change is out of an abundance of caution and is in support of patient safety to avoid unnecessary travel to the hospital if not required and for patients with lower immediate needs.

NL Health Services would like to reassure the public that all urgent and emergent health-care services are not affected at this time and emergency departments remains open.

Mental health and addictions and primary health-care staff remain on-site at the reception centre located at Carbonear Academy, 88 Valley Road, Carbonear.

Health-care staff are offering in-person and virtual care for impacted evacuees at the reception centre, including:

  • Treating a cold, flu, or sore throat.
  • Managing minor injuries (e.g., sprains, cuts).
  • Addressing a urinary tract infection.
  • Evaluating and managing a rash or allergic reaction.
  • Providing care for a one-time medication refill or urgent symptom.
