About Research and Innovation

Advancing health care through research, partnerships, and innovation

NL Health Services’ Research and Innovation department brings together research, clinical expertise, and innovation to improve patient care and health system outcomes across Newfoundland and Labrador.

How this service can help you

Innovation and Living Lab
NL Health Services operates as a province-wide Living Lab, where patients, staff, researchers, and partners collaborate to develop, test, and refine new health-care solutions. This includes working with industry and academic partners to improve care delivery, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

Culture of innovation
We support a responsible culture of innovation that encourages new ideas while prioritizing patient safety, value-based decision-making, and transparency. Our approach focuses on long-term outcomes, sustainability, and shared accountability.

Innovation processes
We guide projects from intake to implementation using a structured process that includes needs analysis, project planning, testing, evaluation, and scaling. This ensures innovations are evidence-informed, secure, and aligned with system priorities.

Health Innovation Acceleration Centre (HIAC)
HIAC is a dedicated collaboration and event space designed to support innovation activities, meetings, and conferences. It serves as a hub for idea generation, testing, and partnership development within the health-care innovation ecosystem.

Library and information services
Our provincial library and information services team provides evidence-based resources, literature searching, training, and research support to staff, clinicians, and learners across NL Health Services.

Research and clinical trials
We support applied health research and clinical trials across many disciplines. All research follows strict ethical, privacy, and governance requirements. Clinical trials help determine whether new treatments, therapies, or devices are safe and effective, and rely on voluntary participation.
