Who we are

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program provides compassionate, trauma-informed care to individuals who have experiencesexual assault. SANEs are registered nurses with advanced training and education in medical and forensic assessment for individuals aged 16 and older (18 and older in St. John’s) 
 
SANEs are committed to providing sensitive, patientcentered care, and support individuals in making informed choices about their health, well-being and next steps.

What we do

Our specially trained SANEs can provide:  

  • A medical forensic examination
  • Options and support for evidence collection and police reporting, if the patient chooses to report
  • Medications to help prevent sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy 
  • Information on medical care options and follow-up support
  • Referrals to community resources and outpatient counselling services, such as End Sexual Violence NL, The Journey Project, and Victim Services 

How to access this service

SANEs are trained in all health-care zones.

If a SANE is not immediately available, care will still be provided. Health-care teams can offer medical attention, support and help coordinate access to follow-up services.

  • Eastern-Rural Zone – Emergency departments in Clarenville, Bonavista, Bell Island and Carbonear 
  • Eastern-Urban Zone – St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s (24/7 program)
  • Central Zone – Emergency departments and clinics in Gander, Grand Falls-Winsor, Twillingate, Fogo Island, Springdale, Harbor Breton, Brookfield, Botwood and Lewisporte
  • Western Zone – Emergency departments in Corner Brook, Stephenville, Port Aux Basques, Port Saunders, Burgeo and Bonne Bay/Norris Point 
  • Labrador-Grenfell Zone – Emergency departments and clinics in Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador City, Nain, Sheshatshui/North West River, Rigolet, Natuashish, Hopedale, Makkovik and St. Anthony
