Joanmary Baker: A Lifetime of Dedication to Social Work
April 1, 2025
For over 30 years, Joanmary Baker has dedicated her career to social work – helping to transform lives in St. John’s and beyond. Even as a child growing up in Conception Bay South, she was the person others turned to for advice and support—a quality that ultimately shaped her path.
Her deep commitment to social justice led her to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Joanmary has spent two decades providing therapy to individuals and couples, specializing in trauma-focused care. Her work within NL Health Services has allowed her to focus on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based approach that helps individuals heal from trauma.
She is also passionate about learning and embraces therapeutic models such as somatic therapy. This treatment focuses on the mind-body connection using breathwork and movement to help clients process trauma beyond traditional talk therapy.
As a clinical lead for social work in the Eastern-Urban Zone, Joanmary takes a holistic approach, recognizing the impact of factors like food insecurity and housing instability on mental health.
“Social work isn’t just about addressing mental health concerns—it’s about understanding the bigger picture,” Joanmary says. “External challenges shape well-being, and I believe in an approach that acknowledges these realities.”
The Power of Human Resilience
Throughout her career, Joanmary has developed a deep respect for human resilience. She has witnessed the power of change, whether in overcoming depression and anxiety, healing from trauma, or navigating complex mental health struggles. Her work is driven by empathy, believing in every individual’s capacity for growth.
She also recognizes that success and stability are often influenced by circumstances beyond an individual’s control. Many people struggle despite their best efforts, and this understanding shapes her approach, which is one of empathy and non-judgment. Joanmary encourages clients to uncover their own strengths and resources, empowering them to pursue fulfillment in their own way.
“Empathy and understanding are at the core of social work. It’s about meeting people where they are and walking beside them on their journey to wellness,” says Joanmary.

Joanmary’s warmth, curiosity, and sense of humour help her build strong connections with clients, fostering an environment of trust. She believes the relationships she develops with clients are one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.
One of Joanmary’s most memorable successes involved helping a client with severe anxiety become independent – again proving the transformative power of social work.
Jada Harvieux, regional director, professional practice and employee development for NL Health Services, and a colleague of Joanmary shares, “her expertise, empathy, and dedication make her an invaluable presence. She supports clients with compassion and skill while uplifting those around her.”
Advice for Future Social Workers
Building trust and fostering agency in others is at the heart of social work. For those entering the field, Joanmary offers key advice:
- Approach every person with empathy.
- Meet clients where they are.
- Empower individuals to make their own choices, even when they differ from personal beliefs.
The Lasting Impact of Social Work
March is National Social Work Month. As the month comes to an end, Joanmary encourages people to recognize the profession’s impact and encourages anyone looking for a career that embodies compassion, resilience, and belief in the power of change to become a social worker.
“Social work isn’t just about providing solutions. It’s about empowering people to find their own strength and healing. Every person can transform; it’s our job to help them see that potential,” she says.
Outside of work, Joanmary enjoys a full and active life. She shares her home with her two young adult children and two beloved dogs. A passionate traveler, she loves exploring new places and spending quality time with friends. She is also an avid reader who finds joy in getting lost in a good book. After fully recovering from a recent injury, she’s eager to return to her favourite outdoor activities, including walking and hiking.
