About this service

Audiology services help people of all ages who have trouble hearing, hear ringing or other noises in their ears, or have concerns about their balance.

Audiologists are health-care professionals who assess hearing and balance concerns. They can help with:

  • Hearing loss
  • Ringing or other noises in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Sensitivity to sound
  • Balance concerns

You may have a higher risk of hearing loss if you have a family history of hearing loss or have been exposed to loud noise over time.

Getting help early can identify hearing problems and connect you with the care and support you need.

How this service can help you

Audiologists use tests to check your hearing, identify hearing loss and assess tinnitus and balance concerns. They work with you to create a care plan based on your needs.

Services may include:

  • Hearing tests and assessments
  • Hearing aids
  • Hearing implant services
  • Balance testing
  • Auditory-verbal therapy
  • Education and counselling

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program

Babies born in Newfoundland and Labrador are offered a safe, quick and painless hearing screening.

Finding hearing concerns early helps children get support for speech, language and learning.

If you have concerns about your child’s hearing or development, you can ask for an assessment.

Provincial Hearing Aid Program (PHAP)

The Provincial Hearing Aid Program helps eligible people get hearing aids at reduced or no cost.

You may qualify if you are:

  • A child or youth with hearing loss
  • A post-secondary student with hearing loss
  • An adult who meets program criteria

Hearing implant services

At some locations, audiologists work with ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists to assess people who may benefit from hearing implants.

Vestibular (balance) assessment

Balance testing checks for problems with your balance and inner ear. An ENT specialist or neurologist (a doctor who treats conditions affecting the brain and nerves) must request the testing.

Auditory-verbal therapy

Auditory-verbal therapy helps eligible children and adults who use hearing technology build listening and communication skills.

Services may include:

  • Early support for young children with hearing loss
  • Support for school-aged children with cochlear implants
  • Rehabilitation for adults with cochlear implants

What to expect from your visit/appointment

A first audiology appointment usually takes 45 minutes to one hour.

Some appointments may take longer depending on the testing required.

During your appointment, an audiologist may:

  • ask questions about your hearing or balance concerns
  • complete hearing tests
  • review the results with you
  • discuss treatment options and next steps

Sometimes, additional testing is needed. If so, your audiologist will explain what happens next.

After your assessment, your audiologist will work with you to create a care plan.

How to prepare for your appointment

To prepare for your appointment, please:

  • Bring your hearing aids, if you use them.
  • Bring a family member or support person, if needed.
  • Arrive on time.

If your child has an appointment, please do not bring other children who need supervision, as testing requires a quiet space.

You will receive instructions before your appointment if any special preparation is needed.
