Oral health is an important part of overall health and well-being. Dental services in Newfoundland and Labrador help children, youth, and people with special health needs take care of their teeth and mouths.

They help with:

  • preventing dental problems 
  • treating issues early 
  • giving specialized care when needed
  • providing care in hospitals, clinics, and community centres across the province

How this service can help you

Pediatric dental services may include: 

  • dental assessments and consultations  
  • care to help prevent dental problems 
  • fillings, crowns and other treatments to repair teeth
  • tooth removal (dental extractions)
  • treatment for infection or damage inside a tooth (endodontic treatment)
  • treatment to replace missing teeth (prosthodontic treatment)
  • assessment and treatment of serious dental infections 
  • care for injuries to the teeth, mouth of face  
  • visits to help children become more comfortable with dental care

Cleft lip and palate care

The Janeway Dental Clinic works with the provincial cleft care team to support babies born with a cleft lip or palate.

Pediatric dentists may provide specialized devices to support feeding and growth and help prepare babies for future surgery. The clinic also works with other dental specialists involved in the care of children with conditions that affect the face, mouth and jaw.

Sedation and general anesthesia

Sedation or general anesthesia may be available when it is medically appropriate. This may be an option for children who:

  • need extensive dental treatment
  • have medical conditions that affect their dental care
  • have significant anxiety about dental treatment
  • need additional support to safely receive dental care

Dental X-rays

The clinic provides dental X-rays and specialized dental imaging when needed. These images help the care team assess your child’s teeth, jaw and surrounding areas.

How to access this service

The service is mainly for infants, children and youth up to and including age 18 who need specialized dental care.

A referral is required. Referrals must be made by a dentist, physician, nurse practitioner, or other health-care professional using the dental referral form. Additional referral information is available on the Janeway Dental Clinic referrals page.

  • pediatric dentists

  • oral and maxillofacial radiologists (dentists who specialize in dental and facial imaging)
  • dental assistants

The team works together to provide coordinated care in a compassionate, efficient, and professional manner.
