NL Health Services Expands Mental Health and Addictions Navigator Program
April 2, 2025Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is pleased to announce the expansion of the provincial Mental Health and Addictions navigator program.
The program introduced its first navigator in 2016 and supports approximately 2,700 provincial requests for information and services annually. Since its implementation, the Mental Health Systems Navigator program has been a highly effective initiative, providing personalized guidance to individuals, families, and healthcare providers in accessing the appropriate supports and services. By streamlining navigation within the healthcare system, the program has improved service coordination, reduced barriers to care, and enhanced overall patient outcomes.
As a result, NL Health Services has expanded the program to add a second navigator to the team. The navigator has been working with the team, based in St. John’s, since January 6, 2025, providing services for the entire province.
“Having a second navigator provides NL Health Services with an additional resource to improve accessibility, enhance service capacity and provide timely support for individuals and families seeking help with mental health and addiction challenges.” said Leslie Brown, director of Community Mental Health & Addictions, Eastern-Urban Zone. “It not only enhances our capacity but reflects our commitment to support those who are struggling with mental health and addiction challenges, and it enables us to continuously improve upon access to care.”
The program is available to individuals, families and professionals of any age within Newfoundland and Labrador, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“As a navigator with advanced expertise in clinical mental health and addictions, as well as a deep understanding of available services within both the organization and the community, I serve as a central point of contact. I assist individuals, families, and healthcare providers in navigating the health system, ensuring they can access the appropriate supports and resources effectively,” said Barry Hewitt, mental health and addictions systems navigator with NL Health Services. “I work to connect those seeking assistance with the right services and programs while offering guidance for and assisting the public with identifying the right health and social services for them.”
