Patient Safety Key to Province’s New Digital Health Information System

May 13, 2026

Launched on April 25, CorCare, the province’s new digital health information system, is now operational throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and is progressing as expected. Patient safety has been fundamental to this transformational change, which is improving how health care is delivered throughout the province.

Patient safety is at the heart of CorCare – a name inspired by the Latin word cor, meaning heart. CorCare creates one, single digital health record for each patient – secure, comprehensive and accessible in real time. As a result, wherever care is delivered throughout the province, physicians and other health-care providers are working from the same information. The results are safer care for patients, smoother transitions between services, better continuity of care and stronger coordination.

Physicians and other health-care providers have real-time access to a patient’s complete and up-to-date medical information. This access supports more informed clinical decisions, improves continuity of the patient’s care and reduces duplication and the need to search across multiple systems.

“We are pleased with the progress made since the launch of CorCare on April 25. Transformational change comes with challenges, and we have been working through them. We are now focused on resuming normal operations,” said Ron Johnson, chief executive officer (interim). “We thank the many leaders, partners, physicians and health-care teams who have supported and contributed to this project. I’m extremely appreciative of everyone’s efforts.”

Ongoing collaboration with physicians and health-care providers is essential to the success of the digital health system. NL Health Services has been actively supporting physicians and health-care providers and will continue to do so.

“We continue to collaborate daily with physicians and health-care teams. The feedback received from those working on the front lines with patients is extremely valuable and we are listening and adjusting,” said Dr. Gena Bugden, vice president – medical services and academic affairs, and chief of staff of NL Health Services. “We especially thank patients for their support and kindness throughout the transition period. All in all, CorCare will support safer, better-connected care.”

NL Health Services intentionally designed a transition period around the launch of CorCare and built in multiple layers of support, including role-based training, on-site support, phone support lines, command-centre coordination, and patient-safety oversight. The focus has been on identifying problems quickly, supporting teams in real time, and protecting patient care.

CorCare replaces over 150 outdated and disconnected systems with modern tools that enable NL Health Services to plan care more effectively, coordinate services for patients more seamlessly, and better meet the needs of people in Newfoundland and Labrador. Since February 2026, more than 20,000 staff and health-care providers have been trained on the CorCare system and equipment. CorCare is part of the Canadian platform as are other Canadian jurisdictions such as Unity Health and Alberta Health Services. NL Health Services has benefited from the experience of these jurisdictions.
