About this service

NL Health Services provides dental surgery for people who need anesthesia or other specialized support during their procedure.

Most dental surgeries are outpatient procedures, meaning that you can go home the same day. Some people having emergency surgery, such as incision and drainage of a dental abscess, may need to stay in hospital. For example, a serious dental infection may require treatment with antibiotics and monitoring in hospital.

Dental surgery services are provided by appointment. Emergency dental surgery is only available in the Eastern zones.

Who can access this service

This service is for people who need dental surgery and may require anesthesia or specialized care because of their medical needs.

Common procedures may include:

  • tooth removal (dental extraction)
  • repair of damaged or decayed teeth (dental restoration)
  • dental fillings

Your care and recovery will depend on the procedure and your individual health needs.

For planned dental surgery, you need a referral from a health-care provider.

If you need urgent dental surgery, you may be assessed through an emergency department.

Before planned surgery, you will have an appointment at a pre-admission clinic, up to three days before. During this appointment, the care team will explain how to prepare, what will happen during your surgery and what to to expect during your recovery.

Your care team may include:

  • dental surgeons
  • dental assistants
